This background check is conducted by the FBI and includes a search of state and federal databases to ensure the buyer is not prohibited from owning a firearm. Some of the reasons that a person may be prohibited from owning a firearm include being a convicted felon, being committed to a mental institution, or having a history of domestic violence.
If the background check is successful, the licensed dealer will then complete the sale of the firearm to the buyer. The buyer will be provided with a copy of the firearms transaction record, and the seller must also retain a copy for their records.
